THE PERFUME OF THE QUEENS IN THE FRAGRANT PORT

Legend has it that the Queens, on their return trip to Nanking from California, begged the captain of the Boat of Desire to first take them to a magical place near the mouth of the Pearl River in southern China. They had read a book in the ship’s library that talked about the port full of boats of all colors and its blue waters framing strange buildings, all protected by green mountains.

The captain fulfilled their wishes, and the Queens were fascinated to see such an unexpected city that seemed to extend thousands of needles up into the sky during the day and then rest at night beside its calm waters and serene mountains. They would have to come back here again, but now time was pressing for their return to Nanking. Yet, how would they find their way back without the captain to help them?

The solution was very simple. Their fragrances would guide them. Rosa Roja, Rosa Blanca and Rosa Negra trickled a few drops of their perfumes into the limpid waters. Ever since then the city has been called
